Abstract

Gout Arthritis or gout disease ranks second in Indonesia after osteoarthritis in the elderly. Patients with gout arthritis in the elderly worldwide reach 355 million people and will increase every year (WHO, 2019). Risk factors that cause a person to develop gout are age, excessive intake of purine compounds, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of physical activity, hypertension, and heart disease According to the International Association for Study of Pain (IASP) pain is an unpleasant emotional feeling due to actual or potential damage or describes the condition of damage. The purpose of this case study is to describe nursing care with chronic pain due to gouty arthritis at Wisma Lansia J. Soenarti Nasution. The method used is descriptive in the form of: interviews, observations, and documentation studies. This case study takes chronic pain in the elderly with gouty arthhtitis as a nursing problem. The management carried out in this case study to reduce pain in clients is with non-pharmacological therapy including: warm compresses, deep breath relaxation techniques, distraction techniques, massage techniques, and recommendations to reduce purine intake. This case study proves to Mrs. N as a client experiencing chronic pain that the techniques described above can reduce the pain scale that the client feels every day, with an initial pain scale of 5 and ending pain scale 1 with uric acid levels within normal limits. Recommendations for the manager of the elderly guesthouse are to provide a low purine diet to avoid increasing uric acid levels and do warm compresses, deep breath relaxation techniques, distraction techniques as well as massage techniques if clients have pain.
