Abstract

The microbiology laboratory is an academic environment with a risk of exposure to hazardous biological agents. However, based on preliminary observations in the field, practical negligence is still found among second-year students, such as inconsistent use of gloves and lowering masks to the chin area during laboratory sessions. This condition potentially increases the risk of cross-contamination and occupational infections. Describing internal factors, including knowledge, risk perception, and attitude, is urgently required in this study as these cognitive and affective domains serve as the fundamental basis for shaping students' safety behavior. Objective: This study aims to describe the factors influencing the use of Level 1 PPE among second-year students in the Microbiology Laboratory of the Medical Laboratory Technology Department at Poltekkes Kemenkes Bandung. Methods: This research was a descriptive quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. Sampling was conducted using the Slovin formula, obtaining 67 respondents. Primary data were collected using a Google Form-based questionnaire for the independent variables and a direct observation checklist for the dependent variable. Results: The results of the univariate analysis showed that the majority of respondents had a Good knowledge level (100%), High risk perception (50.7%), Good attitude (94.0%), and a Complete and Correct PPE usage category (64.2%). These findings indicate that the majority of second-year students already possess good cognitive understanding and a positive attitude toward PPE, and have applied PPE usage completely and correctly during practical sessions. Conclusion: It is concluded that most second-year students have good knowledge, risk perception, and attitude toward Level 1 PPE, and have implemented its use completely and correctly during microbiology laboratory practice.
