Abstract
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major cause of hospitalacquired infections, and these infections are resistant to β-lactam antibiotics. The
presence of MRSA in hospitals can increase cross-contact between patients and
healthcare workers, this causes patients with low immunity to be infected and also
causes nosocomial infections. The presence of MRSA can prolong hospitalization,
increase morbidity and mortality rates. Medical devices and public facilities that are
frequently touched can contribute to virus transmission and increase the possibility
of nosocomial infections. This study aims to determine the presence of MRSA in
medical devices and public facilities in the inpatient ward of Hospital X. This study
used a descriptive design and Purposive sampling technique. The inpatient ward
of Hospital X is filled with items such as chairs, tables, cupboards, IV poles,
Emergency Buttons, and Bed rails. The study was conducted using growth on
blood agar and Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA), biochemical tests using catalase test
and coagulase test and using the Kirby-Bauer 30 μg cefoxitin antibiotic disc
diffusion method on Mueller Hinton agar (MHA). Of the 30 samples tested, 5
(16.67%) were positive for MRSA and 25 (83.33%) Methicillin-Sensitive
Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). The presence of MRSA was found on bed rails
as many as 3 samples (10%), infusion poles 1 sample (3.33%), and chairs 1
sample (3.33%). The highest presence was found on Bed rails. Based on the
results of the study, it was determined that MRSA was still present on various
surfaces in Hospital X. Therefore, cleaning and disinfection of object surfaces,
increasing compliance with hand hygiene protocols, and conducting regular
monitoring by the Infection Prevention and Control Program (PPI) to prevent the
spread of infection.
