Abstract
Random Blood Glucose (RBG) testing is an important laboratory examination used in the diagnosis, monitoring, and evaluation of diabetes mellitus therapy. At Bayu Asih Regional General Hospital (RSUD Bayu Asih) Purwakarta, random blood glucose testing is performed using the Point of Care Testing (POCT) method to support rapid clinical decision-making in certain cases, while routine laboratory testing is conducted using the spectrophotometric method. The use of these two methods may produce variations in test results, which can affect clinical interpretation. Based on a preliminary study of 10 random blood glucose test records at RSUD Bayu Asih Purwakarta, differences ranging from 7 mg/dL to 14 mg/dL were found between the POCT and spectrophotometric methods. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the results of random blood glucose measurements using POCT and spectrophotometric methods and to analyze the differences between the two methods at the Laboratory of RSUD Bayu Asih Purwakarta.
This study employed an analytical cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 30 patient blood samples that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Random blood glucose levels were measured using both POCT and spectrophotometric methods on the same samples. Data were analyzed descriptively to determine the mean, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation values. Data normality was assessed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, followed by the Paired Sample t-test to evaluate differences between the two methods.
The results showed that the mean random blood glucose level measured using the POCT method was 102.77 mg/dL, whereas the mean level measured using the spectrophotometric method was 108.77 mg/dL. The Shapiro–Wilk normality test indicated that the data were normally distributed (p > 0.05), allowing further analysis using the Paired Sample t-test. The Paired Sample t-test revealed a significance value of p < 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between random blood glucose measurements obtained using the POCT and spectrophotometric methods.
In conclusion, there was a significant difference between random blood glucose test results obtained using the POCT and spectrophotometric methods at the Laboratory of RSUD Bayu Asih Purwakarta, with the spectrophotometric method yielding higher results than the POCT method.
