Abstract
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the major causes of healthcare-associated infections and exhibits a high level of resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. Hospital bed sheets can serve as fomites that facilitate the transmission of MRSA because they are frequently in direct contact with patients, healthcare workers, and the surrounding environment. This study aimed to determine the presence and percentage of MRSA contamination on bed sheets in the inpatient wards of Hospital X.
This study employed a descriptive observational design. A total of 30 bed sheet samples used by hospitalized patients for more than 24 hours were collected using a sterile swab technique. Bacterial isolation was performed on Blood Agar and Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA), followed by identification through Gram staining, catalase testing, and coagulase testing. Isolates identified as Staphylococcus aureus were further tested for susceptibility to cefoxitin (30 μg) using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA).
The results showed that 13 isolates were identified as Staphylococcus aureus from the 30 bed sheet samples examined. Based on the cefoxitin susceptibility test, 7 isolates (23.3%) were identified as MRSA and 6 isolates (20.0%) as MSSA, while 17 samples (56.7%) contained bacteria other than Staphylococcus aureus.
The study concluded that MRSA was detected on patient bed sheets in the inpatient wards of Hospital X and may act as a potential source of indirect transmission within the hospital environment. Therefore, strengthening hospital linen management and infection prevention and control measures is necessary to reduce the risk of MRSA spread.
Keywords: MRSA, Staphylococcus aureus, hospital bed sheets, healthcare-associated infection, cefoxitin.
