Abstract
Intestinal worm infections caused by intestinal nematodes remain a public health problem in Indonesia. Microscopic examination of stool samples using the direct wet mount method is the primary diagnostic method; however, it has limitations regarding the stability of the specimen, as it dries easily and is prone to displacement of the cover slip. Gel nail polish has emerged as an economical and readily available alternative sealant; however, in-depth evaluation of its effect on specimen quality remains limited. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of gel nail polish as a sealant in maintaining the quality of intestinal nematode egg preparations. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design with a laboratory observational approach. The study samples consisted of 30 intestinal nematode egg preparations made from positive stool samples and sealed using transparent gel nail polish, which were then dried under UV light for 20 seconds. Observations were conducted by three panelists on days 2, 3, and 4 based on the parameters of cover glass adhesion and egg morphological integrity. The results showed that of the 30 preparations, 26 (86.67%) were classified as “good” and 4 (13.33%) as “poor.” Based on effectiveness standards, the 86.67% result indicates that gel nail polish is highly effective as a sealant. This study concludes that gel nail polish is effective for use as a sealant for intestinal nematode egg preparations. It is recommended that future researchers test its effectiveness on entomological preparations and compare it with UV resin to determine which sealant material is more effective.
