Abstract
Blood donation involves the collection of blood from healthy individuals to meet the transfusion needs of patients. Hemoglobin is one of the primary parameters examined during donor selection. As age increases, the body's ability to restore hemoglobin levels after donation tends to decline due to physiological changes associated with aging. This study aimed to analyze differences in hemoglobin levels before and after blood donation among donors aged over 50 years. This study used a descriptive analytic method with a one group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 30 blood donors aged over 50 years who donated blood at UTD PMI Kota Bandung. Hemoglobin levels were measured using the Point of Care Testing (POCT) method with HemoCue Hb 301 on capillary blood samples, both before and after donation. Data normality was tested using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and since the data were not normally distributed, analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. The results showed a mean hemoglobin level of 13.81 g/dL before donation and 12.78 g/dL after donation. Statistical analysis yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in hemoglobin levels before and after blood donation. All respondents experienced a decrease in hemoglobin levels after donation. Regular monitoring of hemoglobin levels is recommended for blood donors aged over 50 years as a precautionary measure.
