Abstract

The liquid milk processing industry generates reject waste as a by-product with high organic load, potentially causing wastewater treatment overload. PT. X produces approximately 70–80 liters of reject milk waste daily with elevated BOD and COD levels. Rather than treating it as mere pollutant, this waste contains substantial amounts of protein, lactose, calcium, and other minerals that qualify it as a viable feedstock for Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) production through anaerobic fermentation. This study investigated the effect of different concentrations of rice-based Local Microorganism (LOM) bioactivator on the maturation time of LOF from milk waste. A true experimental study using Post-test Only Control Group Design was conducted, employing three LOM concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%) and a control group without bioactivator, each replicated six times, totaling 19 fermentation units. Parameters assessed included daily temperature, pH, aroma, color and sediment appearance, C/N ratio, and maturation time. Statistical analysis applied One-Way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc Bonferroni test. Results showed mean maturation times of 14.00 days (5%), 11.17 days (10%), and 7.67 days (15%), while the control group did not reach maturity within the 15-day observation period. One-Way ANOVA revealed significant differences among groups (F=89.098; p<0.001). Post Hoc analysis confirmed that all pairwise comparisons were statistically significant (p<0.001). The 15% concentration demonstrated the best overall performance with the lowest C/N ratio (18.50) and all physical-chemical parameters complying with the Ministry of Agriculture Decree No. 261/KPTS/SR.310/M/4/2019. These findings confirm that increasing rice LOM concentration proportionally accelerates LOF maturation, positioning the 15% formulation as the optimal choice for reject milk waste management.
