Abstract

Thalassemia is a chronic disease that requires lifelong treatment and has many complications, affecting quality of life and self-care ability. Self-care is very important for disease management, reducing the risk of complications, and supporting children's independence in their survival. This study aimed to determine the correlation of self-care with the incidence of β-thalassemia major complications in school-age children. The research design used was analytical observational with a cross-sectional approach. The sample of this study was 54 respondents who were taken using a purposive sampling technique with the inclusion criteria of children with a diagnosis of thalassemia β major, aged 6-12 years, can communicate verbally and nonverbally, the mother/family is willing if the child becomes a research respondent, can read, write, and communicate verbally and non-verbally. Exclusion criteria were the child's condition was very weak and had impaired consciousness. Data were collected using the Self-Care Behaviour questionnaire and documentation on thalassemia complications from the patient's medical record. Data analysis used the Spearman Rank test. The results showed a significant correlation between self-care and the incidence of β-thalassemia major complications in school-age children with a p-value of 0.003, which has a fairly strong relationship strength, and negative relationship direction. Nurse recommendations can improve the self-care of school-age children as an effort to prevent the risk of β-thalassemia major complications.
