Abstract
Background: The case study is based on by the incidence of DM, especially in the West
Java region from 1.3% in 2013 to 1.7% in 2018. At Al-Ihsan Regional Hospital, DM is
the highest case in the Inpatient Installation. DM occurs due to abnormalities in insulin
secretion, insulin action, or both. DM often causes complications, so it needs to be
managed properly, including 5 pillars (appropriate diet, physical exercise, education,
independent monitoring of blood glucose levels and pharmacological therapy).
Management of DM is not enough just with convensional therapy, but requires
complementary therapy. One of the them is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)
therapy. PMR therapy is believed to relax the body which has the effect of reducing
blood glucose levels. Purpose: This Final Scientific Work by Nurses aims to apply
nursing care to type 2 DM patients through the application of PMR therapy to reduce
blood glucose levels in the Umar Bin Khattab Room at Al-Ihsan Regional Hospital.
Method: The case study uses a descriptive approach by implementing specific
interventions that refer to Evidence Based Practice (EBP). The intervention was
carried out on 2 patients with a duration of 5 days and blood glucose levels were
measured using a glucometry device. Results: There was a decrease in blood glucose
levels 2 hours post-prandial in both patients. Where is Mrs. DN from 171 mg/dL to 125
mg/dL, while in Mrs. M from 208 mg/dL to 91 mg/dL. Conclusion: The application of
effective PMR therapy can provide a feeling of relaxation in the body which has the
effect of reducing blood glucose levels. Recommendation: It is expected that PMR
therapy can be given to DM patients as a complement to medical therapy in the
management of DM, especially to reduce blood glucose levels.
