Abstract

The research entitled "Factors Associated with Depression in the Elderly at the Garuda Health Center" was motivated by the incidence of depression, which is a psychological disorder in the elderly that should receive attention and if not handled properly can lead to suicidal. Depression is the feeling of sadness, helplessness, loss of hope associated with a stressor. The 2018 Basic Health Research noted that the population of depression in the elderly in Indonesia is 53,432 (16.9%) people. Depression can be caused by physical factors and psychological factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with depression in the elderly at the Garuda Health Center. This type of research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with a total sample of 43 people. The instruments used were the Geriatric Depression Scale questionnaire, social interaction questionnaire, family support questionnaire, and a valid and reliable disease history checklist sheet. The results showed that there was a relationship between medical history (p value = 0.045), social interaction (p value = 0.022), and family support (p value = 0.045) with depression in the elderly. The strongest relationship to depression in the elderly is shown by family support (OR = 6.24). Efforts that can be made by the health center are by holding screening. In addition, support from the family is also needed so that the physical and psychological conditions of the elderly can be maintained.
